I have now missed 6 days of work in the past two weeks. Last week I missed three days for things I was required to attend. This week I've missed three days thanks to laryngitis. I missed Tuesday and Wednesday, decided I could go Thursday when I apparently used up the remaining juice left in my voicebox. SO, I missed work today (friday) for sheer lack of voice. You try controlling 25 11 and 12 year olds with no voice! SOOOOOOO frustrating. You never realize how much you use and value your voice until it's gone. Poor Ariel.

Grandma Jean [Apr. 28th, 2009|06:03 pm]
[Current Location |Canyon Lake]
[mood | sad]

So, my Grandma Jean (my dad's mom) passed away this morning around 6:30. She had a heart attack yesterday around noon and was taken to the local hospital.

My dad, mom, Aunt Sue, Uncle Dan, and brother Chris were all there with her at the hospital. We kept her comfortable and made sure she was taken care of. Given her young age of 86, she had DNR papers, which is why she was not on a pace maker or any of that type of medicine. However, by yesterday evening, she was looking a lot better and was able to hold a conversation, have a sense of humor, and knew everyone who was there with her. My mom, brother, and I stayed at the hospital until they put her in a regular hospital room around 9:00 at night. We tucked her in and she said she just wanted to get some sleep.

I think she passed away peacefully, and quickly.
No memorial service; instead Aunt Sue is hosting a Celebration of Life Sunday at 2pm.

Rest in Peace. xoxo

[music |yelling ;)]

I just listened to the funnest conversation EVER. I'm sitting downstairs doing hw and I can hear my mother literally YELLING into the phone upstairs at her mother. Something with the tv and the remote. I couldn't resist... I picked up the phone and listened in. Hilarious. I was laughing so hard, quietly somehow. Mom told gramma to go to her bedroom and watch that tv instead, but to turn the tv on manually, and she COULD NOT HANDLE THAT. Good lord, I didn't think I would stop laughing. And it's so funny b/c mom is very frustrated and upset (yelling herself into high blood pressure, i'm sure), and dear old granny wasn' upset at all (which is wierd cause she's always high strung).

Anyways, I feel good. Laughter really is the best medicine :)

SO, I have a question about crossing boundaries. Goot (my boyfriend) has recently (like within the past month) started calling me babe and baby. I brought it up to him and asked why after 5 years he's suddenly using those terms with me. He was almost offended I asked because to him those were words he used affectionately and to show how much he cares and thinks of me, he finds them as words of flattery. I, completely satisfied with that answer, accepted it and have enjoyed him using those terms with me ever since.

HOWEVER, I logged onto facebook today and noticed he posted a couple comments on one of his friends pages, a chick (yes I've met her, no I don't like her). The first comment he left was related to a movie - completely harmless, something you would say to a friend. The other comment was on a photo where the chick is posing with a statue and her six pack abs are showing. He said "lookin good, babe". WTF!! Ok, obviously I am a little pissed. What do you think? Should I be pissed? Is this a normal thing for a friend to say? Those of you who are my friends on facebook should be able to see the comment he posted (if he is your friend too).

I haven't talked to him about it yet. Apparently he posted it about 9:20 this morning, and he is in class right now, so I have to wait. He just started back up at school this week and I know he's been stressing out and he was kinda distant with me last night and this morning, but this comment really rubbed me the wrong way.

Job Security? [Sep. 29th, 2008|07:05 pm]
[mood | annoyed]

So, I was hired as a 7th grade math teacher, the same day, apparently, as another teacher was hired as a math teacher at my school. Enrollment is down, they HAVE to let go of 2 language arts teachers, and 1 math teacher.

Of the math teachers, this other teacher (who has not been revealed to me yet)and I are the first in line to go. This other teacher has a single subject credential in math, so that's all he/she can teach. I have a single subject in math AND a multiple subject. Apparently the ONLY way BOTH of us can stay at this school is if I move to 6th grade and teach math and science (I think to take over a long term substitute).

There aren't other math positions available in the district. There are a few 4th and 5th grade jobs available (of which I am also qualified for), but I want to stay at this school and my principal REALLY likes me too and wants to keep me there. How can I say NO to moving to 6th grade if it is the only way to keep us two teachers there.

Now, it's not final because HR has to approve of this, but my principal is really fighting for it. I asked for the time frame on things, and I could end up switching by Monday. Crap. I asked Goot to help me change up my room on Saturday if that's the case, and he happily obliged.

Teaching crap [Aug. 26th, 2008|07:08 pm]
[mood | annoyed]

So, made my first phone calls home today. There was an incident. Here's what I know:
A student told me "Ms. Lewis, she's crying."
I walked over, gave the evil eye to my suspected culprits, all pleading innocence saying they dont know what happened.
I excused her to the restroom.
My BIGGEST suspect gave in and told me the basics:
There was an argument, something about "You're fat/ Your face is fat/ you'll never have a girlfriend/ you'll never get married." ... I stopped listening then.

End Result:
Nothing happened today b/c it was towards the end of class and I had to teach right after that class and didn't know what to do. SO, I called both parents tonight. I got a hold of the boy's mom and she was super supportive. She knows what kind of kid she has and is willing to do anything to make it work. Unfortunately no one answered at the girl's house, so I left messages with two different numbers letting them know there was an incident and it's being dealt with. I DO NOT want this girl (or anyone else) fearing my classroom. I know that this girl was just trying to defend herself and the argument escalated.

Changes will be made, I am going to have a ZERO TOLERANCE policy with putdowns. I pray I can actually stick to it.

Teaching [Aug. 20th, 2008|08:30 pm]

[music |Olympics]

SO, I have officially been teaching for a week (we started last Wednesday). No HORRIBLE complaints. I'm putting in a LOT of extra time. I think I've done about 3 eleven hour days. I know, I know. But when you don't have ANY routines established in your room, or any posters or anything, it takes a while to get the hang. Plus, I probably waist anywhere from a half hour to an hour everyday just vegging/relaxing and talking to my new favorite friend Monica, who is my teaching partner (no we dont share classes, we just do all our planning together). Apparently we have a Striking resemblance of each other... a couple of her students walked up to me thinking I was her last week.... and then one morning as she left my room, my students standing outside thought she was me b/c they asked why I colored my hair. HAHA, it's cool.

Yesterday I had a secretary, who was sitting at one of the office desks, REFUSE to help me make a copy onto a transpareny, NOT b/c she didn't know how to do it, but b/c she was OFF THE CLOCK. Seriously lady, I was off the clock an hour ago at that point. And apparently you're only willing to help me if you get paid. Granted, you had the legal right to turn me down... but 2-3 minutes was NOT that much to ask for. Do the right thing. I have zero respect for that lady now. I saw her a couple times today and glared at her. Lame.

Yesterday a kid farted in class. I was at my desk and it was at the opposite end of the room, but when I looked up, everyone was laughing, so I figured the culprit wasn't too horrified and embarrassed. I had to walk over there - with a straight face mind you - to get them all back on task. It took every ounce of me NOT to laugh. I pretty much ran back to my computer and emailed Monica about what happened. Something that funny needs to be passed on.

First parent conference next week. This kid is a border-line problem in my class, but apparently the other teachers are REALLY having issues. This makes me wonder if I'm too lenient. Like, is he doing the same thing in my classroom, but I don't really care? Crap, I better get on this kid so that the other teacher's can't call my room "Grandma's House" ;)

Ok, I think that's about it for now. More venting to come later :D

Underaged Petrie Dishes [Mar. 1st, 2008|02:14 pm]
Being sick sucks!

We took the kindergartners on a field trip to the farm on Tuesday (where of course I am allergic to everything there!)

I wake up Wednesday with a sore throat, but it wasn't too horrible, so I went to student teaching. I even drag myself to the gym that afternoon.

Thursday morning I wake up and my throat still hurts and my nose is a little runny. I call the boyfriend and he encourages me to suck it up and go to teach(which I wanted him to tell me to do).

Thursday late afternoon I go to my Student Health Center... they run some tests, and, yes, I have Strep Throat.

Stupid kindergartners (turns out it WASN'T the farm after all). So I had to miss student teaching Friday, which I was really bummed about and I'm trying really hard not to infect anybody else (aka, the boyfriend).

Good news, I'm feeling better now, but still pissed that I got sick with something I've never had in my life.

So, a question was directed my way from my boyfriend's parents, and I thought I would throw it out to see what everyone else thinks.

When referring to a computer mouse, what is the correct form of the plural? Is is computer mice, or computer mouses?

My personal opinion is that it is mouses, but I am curious as to what the majority rules...

SO, I want to set up a CD (Certificate of Deposit) account. I've looked around online, and for the amount that I will be able to deposit, Washington Mutual looks like they offer the best rate. However, I am confused slightly as to how it works. It gave me a RATE of 4.98% but also listed an AYP of 5.10%. So... which applies to my money and does it gain interest every month, or just at the end of when I signed up for?

Anybody who can answer or offer some input is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!

Allergies and Knees [Jun. 9th, 2006|03:01 pm]

[mood | drained]

Besides the inevitable allergy attack that is going on right this second....

More (right) knee trouble. It's been "popping" out of place, but this time laterally. I went to the Doctor yesturday and he thinks it is cartilage tearing or grinding, and/or possibly my miniscus. SO, I'm scheduled for an MRI next Tuesday to find out exactly what's going on.

Any volunteers to amputate my legs from the knee down???
